The 0–3 Nursery on Corso Italia

La Giocomotiva on Corso Italia is a bilingual nursery that welcomes girls and boys aged between 3 months and 3 years. It is situated in the centre of Milan, between Porta Romana, Porta Ludovica and Viale Beatrice d’Este.

The nursery also has a section dedicated to infants, separate from the areas for the middle and older children, and designed to provide careful support during their first few months at the nursery. The sections offer the children a stable and familiar group; throughout the day, we also create opportunities for children of different ages to meet, broadening their chances for socialising and discovery.

The premises are situated on the ground floor of a historic building. The rooms, spacious and light-filled, feature wooden furnishings, natural materials and windows overlooking the inner courtyard.

The open-plan space can be adapted to suit the activities on offer, providing children with opportunities for play, movement, exploration and socialising without having to move constantly between different areas.

Settling into nursery

The settling-in period is when each child and their family begin to get to know the nursery and build trust in the surroundings, the people there and the new daily routine.

It is an important step, which requires time and attention. The nursery staff guide children and parents step by step, observing how each child adapts to the new environment and tailoring the process to their individual needs. The model we adopt is Participatory Settling-in, which involves children and parents in the life of the nursery right from the start.

How it works

  • The first few days take place with the presence of a parent or a caregiver. The programme involves three days spent together at the centre, taking part in the various activities throughout the day.
  • In the days that follow, the children usually say goodbye to their parents for a few hours.
  • There are no rigid rules; if the children are willing, they’ll be attending full-time within a few days. Conversely, the transition takes longer, depending on how the child responds.
  • The nursery teachers welcome the children and guide them throughout their time here with experience and sensitivity.

Italian–English bilingualism

At Giocomotiva on Corso Italia, Italian and English are part of the children’s daily lives from their very first months.

The English language is woven into relationships, moments of care, play, reading, songs and project-based activities. The children encounter it naturally and consistently, within real-life, meaningful situations.

Nursery teachers and English teachers work together to create an environment in which both languages become tools for communication, discovery and building relationships. English is not taught as a separate subject, but as part of everyday life at the nursery.

Outdoor Education

At nursery, the outdoor experience stems from direct engagement with our surroundings. Going outside means observing, moving about, listening, encountering people and places, and making small discoveries through the body and the senses.

At Corso Italia, where there is no internal garden, it is above all the area around the nursery that becomes a space for exploration. For older children, outings in the neighbourhood and to nearby green spaces allow them to discover, step by step, city life and the changes it undergoes.

Even within the nursery, natural materials and specially designed activities enable children to continue observing and exploring the elements and changes in nature.

A way of gradually broadening the children’s understanding of their surroundings and helping them form an initial connection with the local area.

The rooms

The spaces are designed to meet the needs for independence, movement, social interaction and exploration.

The nursery has a dedicated area for infants and spaces designed to cater for the changing abilities and needs of the children as they grow.

The spacious and light-filled open-plan area can be reconfigured to suit the children’s projects, experiences and interests.

Wooden furniture, natural objects and materials reminiscent of the woodland create a welcoming space and encourage sensory, creative and scientific experiences.

The workshop is a space dedicated to creative expression, where a variety of materials, tools and techniques enable children to explore, experiment and give shape to their thoughts.

Together with families

Throughout the year, we organise family gatherings so that we can spend time together, exchange views, share experiences and support the children on their journey.

  • Open Doors to Those Who Come – informal drinks for parents
  • Themed evenings – sessions with experts on topics related to child development and of interest to families
  • Meetings with families – sessions dedicated to presenting and discussing the educational programme and the needs that arise during the year
  • Christmas and New Year celebrations – opportunities to get together and enjoy school life as a community
  • May Outing – an outdoor excursion with children, families and educators

We maintain an ongoing dialogue with families throughout the year. You are always welcome to request an individual meeting whenever you feel the need to discuss or explore a particular aspect of your child’s progress in more detail.

In January and May, individual meetings are also held to review the child’s development and for teachers and parents to share their observations.

The section meetings enable families to find out about ongoing projects, gain a better understanding of the children’s experiences and discuss the life of the group.
